Thon Sai Beach - Phi Phi Don Island’s main beach

Ton Sai Beach is the first thing you will meet on Phi Phi Don Island. This is the southern edge of the island isthmus, on which is the only local settlement - Phi Phi Town. Ao Tonsai is different from Lo dalama (opposite side of the isthmus) by the fact that the central part of the bay here has a decent depth.

That is why two piers were built on Tonsai, where all the boats and boats with tourists arrive. Tonsai Beach on Phi Phi Don has a dual purpose - the central and left parts are teeming with boats and are a technical beach, but on the right you can already find a real beach resort with clear sea, sand and other attributes.

Beach description

Phi Phi Don beach front halftechnical, half spa. I would divide the Tonsai beach into two parts, which are visually very conspicuous, both in reality and on Google maps, from a bird's eye view.

On the right edge of the Tonsaya, the total length of the sandy stripis about 1200 meters, of which only 300 meters on the far right can be called a real beach. It's a bit small here, but you can swim, and there are almost no boats.

Near the pier and to the left of it, right up to the cape inthe center of Ao Tonsai is a solid port with longtail clouds along the coast. But boatmen do not differ at all with concern for nature, so much of Tonsai is a long string of ropes on which boats dangle and litter everywhere.

The left side of the Tonsai was also adapted for the beach.rest, but I did not like it there - sand with a bunch of impurities, before my eyes the wall of boats, behind my back - the wall of the rocky shore and hotel fences. For swimming in the sea floats on a rope frogs are fenced off. However, after the cape the quite suitable beach begins with a fairly wide strip of sand and almost without boats.

There are ropes and on the right half of Ao Tonsai, likeand boats with boats, but in much smaller quantities. In general, this edge of the isthmus is surprisingly poorly developed, and there are still large empty spaces, hiking trails, old buildings and bungalows a la straw hut.

Compared to the left half, which is breakingfrom shops and tourist services, the right side of Thonsai looks wild, uninhabited and uncomfortable in some places. Although for an amateur to be separated from civilization, it would be ideal here, despite the slightly inadequate price tag for these very straw huts. There is clean, quiet, small, light yellow sand mixed with pebbles and shells.

Sunset, depth and waves

The left part of Thonsai, which is behind the cape, has a slight slope and is highly prone to ebb, just like all the other beaches of the island. Close to the rocks on the right side of the beach.

The coast on the entire isthmus rises only ona few meters above sea level and has a minimum slope that persists under water. Closer to the center of the sea is gaining depth faster, and under the rocks - the widest part of the shallow bottom.

So waves with strong breeze happen onlyin the center, and at the edges they are felt weaker. In the storm season, of course, the waves will be everywhere and strong, so the coast is sometimes reinforced with concrete structures, which almost do not spoil the appearance of Ao Tonsai.

At low tide, the beach is thoroughly changing, and the sea is 50-150 meters from the coast.

Sun beds and shade

The width of the beach is not the same throughout. If you look at the tide, then the rocks are no more than 20 meters of sand, and closer to the center, the width is generally reduced to zero. Hence the situation with sunbeds - there are no rolling points on the no-man’s land, and opposite the rare resorts, the sunbeds are behind the symbolic, but still fencing. Sometimes there are two or three lounge chairs near the bars or massage fats.

The shadow along the coast is not the thickest, but stillsomething deciduous in places grows. Although I would not particularly count on the natural sources of the shadow - there are more people and the beach is quite open, and at low tide it becomes much wider and you don’t run to the sea.

Infrastructure

First line of Ao Tonsai beach, from the pier and to the rightuntil the end, they are occupied by tourist establishments: bars, restaurants, massage fats and resorts. There is the largest, by local standards, medical facility. Surprisingly, for the whole walk I did not see a single Thai shop, not to mention the network mini-markets. That is - some kind of wilderness, sleeping area in Thai, everything you need is in Phi Phi Town.

But honestly, walking in the heat from the very edgeThonsai Phi Phi Town is not the most pleasant pastime. So, settling on the right edge of the beach, always buy drinks before returning to your bungalow.

But from Tonsai Pier to the end of the left edge of the beachTonsai you are open to all offers of local tourist infrastructure. Phi Phi Town begins just from the exit from the pier and continues into the isthmus. And to the left, along the coast, the footpath with a high traffic leaves - here people walk towards Viking and Long Beach beaches.

From the side of the sea, the border is limited only by curbstone, and on the opposite side there are travel agencies, cafes, pharmacies and other pavilions with tourist services. To go down to the beach here you can not everywhere, and the special desire does not arise.

Houses and hotels on the beach

On the right half there are about six large hotels, although the only really large hotel is the complex of buildings of the Phi Phi Island Cabana Hotel

. It is built on the narrowest part of the isthmus and from this hotel there is access to two beaches on the island: Tonsai and Lo Dalam. In the center of the right half of Tonsai are Phi Phi Sand Sea View Resort

and PP Nice Beach Resort

, and already under the rocks - Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort

which is considered the most worthy in this land of Phi Phi Don.

Unfortunately, almost all hotels and resorts of the islandsuffer from the quality of service and not the most reverent attitude to the maintenance of housing stock. Under the link below, you will be transferred to the general list of hotels on Phi Phi Don, but you click on the icon with the map and there you will already decide on the options for accommodation on Tonsai Beach. The island is so small that Roomguru does not even try to share hotels along the beaches.

How to find the beach

Finding a beach is easy - get off Ao Pier.Tonsai and you will be in the center of Phi Phi Town. If you stand facing the pier, then on the right you will walk towards the beautiful Tonsai, and to the left - towards the technical beach of Tonsai.

At first, the trail will be implicit - too noisy, crowded and from all sides your name is and they sell you something. After 50 meters you will break out of the tourist hell and then follow the path paved with tiles. She is there alone, along the entire coast.
