On the territory of the Rostov region there are severallarge reserves, one of them we visited. This is the almost perfectly preserved archaeological museum of Tanais, an ancient ancient site of ancient settlement, which is still being excavated to this day. And our trip to this place has made an indelible impression on us. And not only because this place is very significant in historical and cultural terms, but also because we had a wonderful opportunity to talk a little bit there with an amazing person Valery Fedorovich Chesnok, whose thoughts and life position in general forced us to look differently at many questions
The route of our trip and its concept can be seen here: We participate in the project "Russia for 365 days"

Tanais Rostov region
To appreciate the importance of Tanais, you need to readhistorical references and walk through museums (after all, many museums of the world keep exhibits from these excavations), but for us this ancient settlement turned out to be significant in its symbolism. And the former director of the archaeological museum, Valery Fedorovich Chesnok, who has worked here for 30 years, helped us understand this. He gave us a small tour of the museums of the ancient city and the sites of the excavation itself. He told that the first buildings date back to the 3rd century BC. This city stood at the same time at the mouth of the river and on the banks of the Sea of Azov, it was a major economic and commercial center and port. Tanais existed for about 8 centuries, but due to the fact that the sea began to shallow and retreat, trade faded away, and the city, respectively, slowly died.
Tanais - a developing structure
Valery Fedorovich has repeatedly stressed that Tanais- a developing structure, not just an open-air museum. There are organized circles for children, and theatrical festivals are held, and a large reconstruction of the city is planned, and new excursion routes will be developed. For example, the Olympic route Tanais-Sochi, in which we were also invited to participate.
We are all one
But what attracted our attention most of all inthe stories of Valery Fedorovich, so this is that in ethnic terms Tanais is a very complex monument. This is not just a Greek city, it is a Greek-Scytho-Sarmatian-Miotsky monument, and it turned out that its inhabitants formed their own community, a special ethnos - Tanaits. And it was here that the most fascinating for Oleg and us began in the narration of our interesting interlocutor. If to express this thought of Valery Fedorovich in a nutshell, then in the historical space we are all mixed up, there are a lot of moments in history that united different nationalities and ethnic groups. And if you can truly feel it, then all sorts of modern ills of society, such as chauvinism, nationalism, etc., begin to seem ridiculous and useless. For example, did you know, for example, that a whole ancient settlement of Sungir was found in the Vladimir region, and you noticed from the remains that the settlers who lived there had pronounced Negroid features? It turns out that we are all a little Negroid, somewhere Mongoloid, in some Asians ... And how many excavations have not yet been made, how many more we still have to find and what unexpected discoveries about ourselves we still have to learn! Maybe archeology can reconcile all of us and prove visually that we are all brothers and sisters, the same blood flows in all of us.
Travel, as the knowledge of truth
I never in my life matched archeology andtraveling, never wondered how much in common in these two phenomena. And Valery Fedorovich, a well-known and respected archeologist, so easily draws analogies between them, telling us how important it is to travel, see the life, customs of other people penetrate into another culture. And not only because “everything is known in comparison,” but also because other nations always have something to learn, something that they learn from. And maybe you should not worry so much that we are adopting the cultural characteristics of some other countries, that we consider it fashionable that we did not have before: “Close the doors to delusion. “But what about truth come in?”
