Marseilles and the Mediterranean coast

To go on an independent journey through Europeby car and not to go to the azure coast of France - this is a real crime! And although everyone around us warned that Marseille is now the epicenter of strikes, that scavengers basically do not go to work, and there are a lot of stinking garbage bags on the streets, we decided to go there. First of all, because in Marseille we were waited by a very interesting overnight stay on the yacht (what is whiskey), secondly, because we wanted to swim nearby in some secluded cove on the Mediterranean coast and, thirdly, well, this is the Cote d'Azur after all (la Cote d’Azur)!

Where to stay in Marseille

Since not all suits cousin (couchsurfing), we also do not often use it, especially with a child, and it is better to book hotels in Europe in advance, I’ll recommend you Hipark residence marseille or Adagio Access Marseille Saint CharlesOne is cheaper, the other is more expensive, but both are great hotels. Well, as we lived on a yacht, read below. :)

Arrival in Marseille

We arrived in Marseille in the evening, a littlecircled in search of the desired port and parking - and here we are on a yacht. The first test is to get on the boat with all our sleeping bags and things. Ladders for teapots like us are not provided, and the nose of the yacht is pretty high. Well, since the third and fourth, we have overcome the art of climbing and felt like real experienced sailors. The yacht itself was small, inside the so-called kitchen with a table transformed into a bed, in the nose there was another bed for two people who loved to sleep in close conditions, and in the tail of the boat was a big bed where the host himself slept with his children.

Night marseille

Having dinner all together and having a talk on variousthemes, our glorious four went on an introductory walk through the night Marseilles. The show, I must say, not for the faint of heart. In addition to various flavors from all over the world, from bags dumped into huge piles or just onto the pavement with garbage, it was very uncomfortable to meet the excessively noisy, apparently woody, and attentively looking at the Arab youth. It is so strange, as if the young French had already gone to bed for a long time, and the Arabians, on the contrary, had just now woken up and went hunting.

But whether we were not so interesting preyfor them, or if this is a mistaken idea of their aggressiveness, and in fact they are simply much more emotional than we, thank God, we did not have a chance to find out on our own experience. The city of Marseille is the second largest city in France, and by the Arabs in it, almost the first. They say this is due to the fact that the Mediterranean coast and the south of France are the closest and most comfortable for them in terms of climate.

On a yacht

We slept that night perfectly under the lullingwiggle and bursts of waves of the Mediterranean on board a yacht. And in the morning we were waiting for coffee and a delicious French breakfast aft. Niko, the owner of the vessel, does not rent an apartment, but is going to live on his boat all year round. From his stories, we realized that if you do not have an apartment in addition to the yacht, a car in the garage and a permanent job that you need to go to every day, then it becomes very profitable to own the boat for money and conveniently.

It turns out that all those for whom the yacht is onlyjust another toy, they go out into the sea only 5 times a year, all the rest of the time it is in the port, and they pay monthly rent for a boat-place, which in total for the year goes out significantly. The larger and more expensive the yacht - the greater the payment. If you live on your ship and periodically go on it at sea, it turns out to be even cheaper than renting an apartment in the same city of Marseilles, because you only have to pay for those days when you are in the port. Niko does not have a new yacht, she is about 20 years old, these cost from 6 thousand euros.

Marseille afternoon

After breakfast in a pleasant interesting company, after a photo session on the stern of the yacht (wherever without it), we went to explore the sights of Marseille. We were very lucky with the weather, it was sunny and unexpectedly warm after cold Poland and cool Germany. On the advice of Niko, first of all they went up to the observation deck at the Cathedral of Notre-Dame de la Garde and went inside the temple. More spacious there than in our churches, and most importantly, lighter. Candles that you can take from the shelf yourself, lowering 1 euro in a special box, benches, special supports, so as not to kneel on the floor - in general, as in all of Europe, everything is for people. This is where the mentality begins!

Bathing in the cold sea

Well, the highlight of our program was swimming inthe Mediterranean coast! After driving 50 kilometers from Marseille, we found a secluded cove and parking for the car. It’s also difficult to call our action, of course: undressed, warmed up, ran into the water, smelled it and jumped out with a rocket, the temperature in the Mediterranean at that time was no higher than 16 degrees. But you can imagine how it was seen walking along the shore French in jackets ?!

One elderly couple could not stand it and even went tous, to clarify, maybe we are doing this on a dispute. I had to explain that we just really wanted to swim on the coast of the Mediterranean Sea, and since we are hardened, we are not so afraid of cold water.

There's another couple in the parking lot interestedour car: like Renault, like Dacia, and Logan is written. We talked with them, told ourselves that we were from Russia, that we decided to drive independently to Europe by car. In general, I noticed that the French very easily start a conversation with strangers and are genuinely interested in what they are asking.

The place where we swam was very cozy and later we even regretted that we did not stay there to spend the night in a tent on the seashore, there was still half a day ahead and the road called us further.
