WordPress plugins on life-trip - for a travel blog and not only

Something in the last month I received as many questions on various plugins on the blog as I did not receive in the entire past year. All you have decided to do the technical part of blogs in the new year? :) Since my plugins don't change much, orthey change more precisely, but they are used similar in functionality, I decided to tell about my list, I think it will be relevant for a long time. Perhaps, other bloggers (including travel bloggers) will find something useful. This, of course, only about Wordpress.

True, almost half of the plugins are not visiblesite visitors, and simplifies the life of the admin by performing some actions automatically. That is, if you are used to doing all this with your hands, then you will not need them.

The content of the article

A warning

Note that each plugin is a little bit, but it startsload the blog, so do not get carried away. I periodically look through my plugins and think about what can be waived, for example, if a new functionality has appeared in some plugin and another separate plugin can now be disabled. Also, sometimes when choosing a new plug-in or when sorting out old ones, I check the load that each plug-in creates individually, alternately turn them off (on the test site), and choose the one with the least requests.

Or not so long ago, specially walked alongplugins and looked what scripts they include and CSS. For example, the popular Contact Form 7, despite being used on just one page, includes several scripts and styles on ALL blog pages. This is not the case! I put it, it means that the feedback form on the “Contacts” page, where one and a half people visit a day, but its scripts are loaded for everyone else too. Not good.

I recommend hosting

Periodically ask, so I will write hereseparately. I recommend to all novice bloggers and website owners Hosting Beget. It has very small prices, but at the same time a rather convenient control panel and technical support helps in solving various issues. I went through several hosting before moving to them. And, by the way, some issues with plugin compatibility have disappeared. As you know, a lot depends on the libraries that are installed and any restrictions on the server. Prior to this, some plugins (for example, a backup plugin) generally refused to work.

4 years I was on the Run and still use fortheir small projects. But if you have a high-load site, as I have now, with a lot of traffic, then you need a VPS or VDS. I have been using Fastvps VPS in recent years and I’m completely satisfied. Again, a good speed of response from the server, support sometimes helps even when it is not obliged, and the tariffs are quite at the same level.

List of plugins

Currently, the blog is worth 32 activeplugin, and a few are used occasionally and disabled. Someone will find this figure too big, but I’m not personally a fan of plug-in plug-in replacing plug-ins with a template, it’s less universal for a non-programmer (it used to stand still, get rid of it little by little). And the plugins are the same code, and if it is written normally, there won't be much difference. Considering that now on all blogs there are social network widgets, comments from them, the Share buttons, all sorts of partner widgets, they influence the site loading speed, and plugins are more of a burden on the hosting. This issue is solved by switching to the same Begat (if you have very bad hosting and there was little attendance), or to the VPS if attendance is high.

plugin-travel-blog

I’m not going to describe all the plugins right now, sincesome are known to all, while others are too individual to be needed. Nevertheless, most of it is present, both active and inactive.

Akismet is the most famous anti-spam plugin, which costs many, because it goes along with WordPress. Once upon a time I used additional spam plugins (captcha all sorts), but completely left them and left only Akismet, it is enough. And captcha, on the contrary, only dares visitors, I, for example, only because of it can not leave a comment, because I do not want to peer and write some badges. My Akismet does not miss spam at all, and very rarely marks normal comments with spam.

BackWPup is a backup plugin, convenient because one of the first people got backup in Dropbox. Now, probably, such plug-ins are already full, I use it out of habit.

Broken Link Checker - useful plugin forchecks for broken links and redirects. Usually it is disconnected from me, and I use it every six months. He always finds 10 link links, in which either I made a mistake at one time or they became invalid. Such a check would be good for everyone to do, otherwise both visitors and search engines may not like such links. I also remove the redirect links or change them if they appear. Just be careful with the plugin, it can damage the blog, make backups necessarily.

Contextual Related Posts - similar posts pluginat the end of the post. I don’t know how necessary it is, because all the same, all these plugins select not entirely similar posts. It is inconvenient that you have to customize CSS styles in your theme, if you plan to use the output of similar posts with pictures.

Display Future Posts - shows scheduledposts You can make a block "future posts" and plan a few pieces. At the moment, I removed it, and I write in the widget with my hands, as I release posts almost immediately after writing.

EWWW Image Optimizer - really necessary pluginto reduce the weight of the pictures. Even if the photo is saved with 60-70% jpeg quality and all the meta-information is removed from it, it still somehow compresses it, reducing the weight by 10-20% (sometimes more). For photoblogs and travel blogs can be relevant. Although I drove through it and the pictures are embedded in the template.

Float Ads Fixed Position - a floating widget in the sidebar. The plugin is a little crooked, but only he wanted to work on the new template. Before that I used Q2W3 Fixed Widget.

Formidable - feedback form instead of Contactform 7. By default, all pages load only one CSS, and scripts only on the page with the form. Perhaps there is something even easier from ready-made solutions, but after testing 5 plug-ins, I did not find anything, only if contact form is a paid version.

FV Gravatar Cache - cache for those who useGravatary. I would not say that it is directly needed, but if there are 200 comments on a page, then the page loads rather slowly, and the browser does not cache avatars. Moreover, each empty avatar (when a person does not have a gravatar) for some reason goes as a separate file, but it can be done with the help of a plug-in, so that only the file is.

iThemes Security - plugin to protect your blog. There are many functions, rather sophisticated. But you can only use the basic functions that are performed by writing to htaccess. That is, you can write and disable it. I will list some useful things he does: hiding the admin panel (logging in at other addresses), banning IP when selecting passwords or with a large number of 404 errors, banning access to the engine folders and files, replacing the admin name.

Maps Marker Pro - the best map plugin for blogson WordPress, I don’t even know if he has any analogues. It was just such a plugin that I lacked in 2010, and so I waited for it, watched it from the very beginning of development. I use the paid version due to import / export, grouping points, lack of links, map adaptation for different screens. But the majority will have enough of its free analogue - Leaflet Maps Marker. Of the minuses - there is very little filtering of points, you have to think through how best to organize the entire collection of points. The author promised to make filters, we are waiting.

New Adman - an old plugin, which seems to benot even in the official repository, but very simple and convenient because of this. Places advertising (Adsens, Direct or any other) at the beginning of the post, at the end of the post and approximately in the middle. You can show only one of the blocks, and all three blocks can be different. A year ago I tried to find a replacement for him, as he incorrectly calculates the middle (he places it somewhere closer to the beginning), but he never found it.

NextScripts: Social Networks Auto-Poster - automatic posting to all social networks. Saves time for a blogger! Scheduled post and on the social networks, he was sold automatically.

Optimize Database after Deleting Revisions -completely optional plugin, but also saves a little time. Optimizes the database by first removing spam comments, post revisions and deleted items. I used to do it manually, now he does it without me once a day (less often).

P3 (Plugin Performance Profiler) - plugin, which can occasionally be included to compare the load of all plug-ins in a pie chart. I don’t know how well he shows everything correctly, but it’s possible to use it as a guide.

PHP Code Widget - if you need php code in the widget, you can use this plugin or equivalent.

Post Editor Buttons Fork - Anotheroptional plugin, but still tell. Since I usually use an html editor instead of a visual editor, it is inconvenient that h2 h3 h4 tags have to be written with pens. And with the help of this plugin you can make yourself buttons for these tags. Naturally, you can create any buttons (elementary interface).

Posts Character Count Admin - maybe you willlaugh, but I can’t get used to the fact that WordPress shows the number of words, and not the number of characters in the admin when you write a post. I turned it off several times already, but still come back to it :)

ReplyMe - plugin for replies to comments withoutsubscriptions. Very controversial plugin. On the one hand, it’s convenient that you don’t have to put a check mark, on the other hand, not everyone likes to get answers to their comments afterwards (although then why write?). In my opinion, it is more convenient than those plug-ins where there is a subscription only for all comments in the post. IMHO, this is generally inconvenient, write comments, subscribe, get an answer to your question, and unsubscribe, so many unnecessary actions. ReplyMe is used in conjunction with the plugin Subscribe to Comments Reloaded, which just makes a subscription to all comments (in fact, very few people need it, maybe disconnect).

Table of Contents Plus - I got 3 or 4 questions about it this month. He has been with me for half a year already, which nobody has asked before? :) Makes automatic fasting, super thing! Makes headings (h2-h3-h4 and so on).

Tako Movable Comments is a rare plugin that is usually disabled. With it, you can transfer comments from one post to another or from post to page, and vice versa.

W3 Total Cache - one of the popular pluginscaching The darkness of the settings, but it works, the load reduces. I tried 3, I chose this one as a result. However, if you use VPS on ngnix, then browser caching of static elements must be configured in the nginx.conf config on the server.

Webmaster Yandex - I do not know how it iseffectively, but there are recommendations to use the “Original Texts of Yandex”, so that the type of authorship is better defined. IMHO garbage, but when you put a plugin, send text to the service is one click, that is, it does not take time at all, so I use it.

Widget Logic - allows you to set the conditions of the showwidgets for specific pages. That is, using it you can show the widget in the sidebar only on the selected page / post / category. The thing is good, but I do not use it, because now I have it all in the template itself. Of the minuses - you need to know all sorts of is_single (), is_page (), etc., but there are analogous plug-ins, where everything is much simpler.

WordPress SEO by Yoast - switched to it with All inOne SEO Pack, now nothing buggy, there is a meta ogg for facebook and sitemap.xml, for which two other plugins were previously used. One plugin replaced immediately 3.

WP Ajaxify Comments - allows you to addcomments to visitors without reloading the page. This has long been a trend and is used by all social networks. But the plugin can work crookedly and not with all the templates, you need to check and test. I rush to remove it, as it creates some load, but it is convenient zhezh.

wp-jquery-lightbox is the usual plugin forlightbox windows (photo by clicking is shown in a pop-up window). No worse and no better than others. I try to disable it, since my photo is not shown enlarged, but then the photo will be opened in a separate browser tab, which is not good at all.

WP No External Links - the plugin allowsmask links in posts, in comments, and in the names of the authors of comments in nofollow and redirects. It has been empirically established that it supports the follow tag, if it is written in the link code (valid only for admins), then it will not be masked. The plugin is controversial, since there are no questions like nofollow, but mass redirects (I have 30 thousand comments with links) can be sanctioned by search engines. I once had redirects, like nothing had happened, but the trust site already. In any case, I decided to remove the redirects, you never know. Already found a solution to hide the links in javascript (meaning in the comments), but there is a thought in principle to demolish the URL field in the comments, so that surely and without sanctions.

Panel Load - occasionally turn on to see the number of requests and used memory on a particular page.

P.S. For email mailings now using Dashamail, I can also recommend. I went through a few, having used for 1-2 years, and so far this one turned out to be the best for me.

P.P.S. In no case do I pretend to be universal, but this information can be useful to someone, but they ask and they ask. By the way, if you have some cool find plugins, share, pliz, in the comments. Or maybe, on the contrary, consider that something cannot be used by the type of redirects.

Life hacking 1 - how to buy a good insurance

Choosing insurance is now unrealistically difficult, so to help all travelers, I compile a rating. To do this, I constantly monitor forums, study insurance contracts and use insurance by myself.

Life hacking 2 - how to find a hotel 20% cheaper

First, choose a hotel on Booking. They have a good offer base, but the prices are NOT the best! The same hotel can often be found 20% cheaper in other systems through the RoomGuru service.
