Streets of Baku
The streets of Baku have a thousand-year history. They are distinguished by a mixture of architectural styles. Both old and modern buildings can be found on the streets. Skyscrapers stand next to ancient houses and palaces.
Boulevards and main streets
Boulevards are a popular recreation place for residents and guests of the city. One of the best is considered to be Primorsky Boulevard, which appeared more than 100 years ago. The city authorities are carrying out reconstruction, thanks to which it will become 4 times longer. Another famous boulevard is Baku Boulevard, which runs from the Crystal Hall to the Government House. There is the sea nearby, so this boulevard is also considered an embankment.
The main route of the city is Nizami Street. The construction of this place has been carried out since the end of the 19th century. Therefore, the buildings were built in different styles: neo-Renaissance, baroque, neo-gothic, neoclassicism, neo-Moorish. In recent years, architects have been trying to create projects in the spirit of the country's national culture. Previously, Nizami Street was called Torgovaya, Fizuli, Gubernskaya and Krasnopresnenskaya. It stretches for almost 4 km, crossing the center of Baku from east to west. Nizami street starts near Abdulla Shaig street and goes up to Sabit Orudzhev street. Name «Trading» preserved behind the pedestrian part of the street.
Many Baku streets are sights in themselves. In Soviet times, they were named after party leaders. After 1991, when Azerbaijan gained independence, the streets were named after national figures.
