Munich metro map
The Munich Subway (Untergrundbahn - U-Bahn) began operations in 1971. The metro network is integrated into Munich's transport system and interconnected with the Munich S-Bahn suburban train system. The Munich subway currently consists of eight lines serving 96 stations (100 stations if transfer stations are counted twice), and the total length of all routes is 95 kilometers..
Plans for a metro in Munich date back to 1930, when trams were the main means of public transport in Munich. The Nazis who came to power proposed ambitious plans to change the transport system in Munich, which also included the construction of a subway. Construction began, but abandoned in 1941 at the height of World War II. After the war, the priority of the city authorities was not the construction of a new metro system, but the reconstruction of damaged tram lines. In the 50s, plans for an underground tram began to be discussed, but in 1964 it was decided to build a "real underground metro".
Work began on February 1, 1965 and accelerated towards the 1972 Olympics. On October 19, 1971, the first line began operations between Kieferngarten and Goetheplatz with a total length of 12 km. On May 8, 1972, the section between the Münchner Freiheit and the Olympiazentrum ("Olympic Line") was opened. 10 days after the opening of the Olympic Games in Munich, the S-Bahn began its full operation.
Munich metro opening hours
The break in the metro is from 1 to 4 in the morning, on weekends - from 2 to 4 in the morning, with the exception of holidays. Train intervals during normal hours are 10 minutes, and during rush hours - 2-5 minutes.
Munich metro lines
Most stations have two tracks with an island platform in between. Only the stations Olympia-Einkaufszentrum (U1), Richard-Strauss-Straße (U4), Neuperlach Süd (U5), Garching-Hochbrück and Nordfriedhof (both U6) have side platforms.
Apart from the U5 and U6 lines, all Munich metro lines are underground along their entire length. Line U5 runs above ground in its southern section Neuperlach - Süd, U6 in the northern section of Studentenstadt (except for stations and the Garching and Garching- Forschungszentrums section).
The Munich underground has three "family lines" that share routes in the city center. Train timetables on these lines are coordinated to ensure regular train intervals on the common section. At Scheidplatz and Innsbrucker stations, four tracks lie in parallel at the same level, where cross-platform exchange is introduced.
The trains of the Munich metro differ in their speed of movement - they operate at speeds up to 80 km / h, this is the maximum speed among the German subways. Munich trains have good noise insulation, at each station there are electronic boards indicating the time of arrival of the train. To enter the carriage and exit, you must press the button located at the door.
Munich metro tickets
At the entrance to the station, validators are installed, where passengers independently punch tickets. Tickets not validated are invalid. Controllers work on routes. Tickets are valid for all types of public transport in Munich. You can buy tickets from machines installed in station lobbies. Free travel for children under 6 in the Munich metro and on all public transport.
