Airport in Oryol

The airport in Oryol is located six kilometers towards the south-western part of the city.
Until recently, the airport received heavy aircraft Boeing 737 and 747, TU-154 with a maximum take-off capacity of 98 tons..
Today the airport is mothballed pending its further fate.

History

The history of air travel in Orel dates back to 1911, when a biplane flew over the province, operated by one of the first Russian pilots S.I. Utochkin.
And in 1921, at the former Oryol hippodrome, the first air station was organized to perform regular flights from Oryol to Moscow. In 1923, the flight was extended, now it has become - Moscow - Orel - Kharkov - Tiflis.
By the beginning of the 30s of the last century, 2 airfields were rebuilt in the city:

  • local airlines airport with unpaved runway. This includes two buildings for passengers, equipped with a passenger check-in counter, information desk, luggage storage, police and luggage inspection points, and even vending machines for postcards and newspapers. Worked a mother and child room.
  •  Military airfield. During the Second World War during the occupation, the 51st squadron was stationed here «Luftwaffe-Ost». The Germans carried out a major overhaul of the airfield, reconstructed the runway.

At the end of the 2nd world airfield «Southern» in Oryol was cleared of mines and completely restored.
In 1981, the military airfield was merged with the airport of local airlines and transferred to the status of a civilian.
Since 1991 the airport has been working with the airline «Eagle-avia», with a good fleet of aircraft TU-154, YAK-40, TU-204. But in the late 90s, the company declared itself bankrupt. It is being replaced by an airline «Transaero», which subsequently carried out the repair of the runway and the reconstruction of the terminal building.
In 1999, the air communication Orel - Moscow, after a long break, was restored. Flights began to operate not only to Moscow, but also to Minsk, Saratov, Penza and other cities of Russia. In the future, it was planned to build new cargo and passenger terminals, a new apron and the development of the corresponding infrastructure.
However, in 2004 the airline «Transaero» changed its place of deployment to St. Petersburg, after which the airport in Oryol gradually began to decline. And, unfortunately, the airport in Oryol is now excluded from the lists of the State Register of Civil Airfields of the Russian Federation..
