Moscow metro: map, description, photo
The Moscow metro was opened on May 15, 1935. For several decades, it has been the main public transport in the capital, carrying more than half of all passenger traffic. The layout of the Moscow metro lines repeats the historically formed radial-circular layout of the city. Thus, the metro connects the central part of the city with the sleeping areas. Every year the lines are expanding, and the number of stations is increasing. As of March 2014, the Moscow metro has 12 lines and 194 stations. The total length of the network is 325.4 kilometers.
The average passenger traffic of the Moscow metro is more than 7 million passengers per day, periodically on weekdays it reaches 10 million. According to this indicator, the Moscow metro ranks 5th in the world after the subways of Seoul, Beijing, Tokyo and Shanghai.
Key dates from the history of the metro
The first line of the Moscow metro opened on May 15, 1935. The line connected the station «Park of Culture» with station «Sokolniki», and branched off from the station «Okhony Ryad» to the station «Smolensk». Two years later, this branch was extended to the station «Kievskaya». A year later, in March 1938, two metro lines were already operating in Moscow - Kirovsko-Frunzenskaya (now Sokolnicheskaya) and Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya.
During the Great Patriotic War, the expansion of the metro lines did not stop. And after the war, a plan was adopted to create a circular route. The first section of the Circle Line began operations on January 1, 1950. Trains followed from the station «Kursk» to the station «Park of Culture». Two years later, the second section took passengers in a different direction - from the station «Kursk» to the station «Belarusian». On March 14, 1954, the Circle Line of the Moscow Metro was closed.
In December 2002, the 164th metro station "Bulvar Dmitriya Donskoy" was opened, which became the first metro station located outside the Moscow Ring Road.
At the end of December 2003, the Butovskaya light metro line was launched. And in November 2004 - Monorail transport system.

Payment for travel in the Moscow metro
Metro tickets are sold at ticket offices and vending machines in front of the station. For multiple trips on the metro, it is wiser to purchase cards for multiple trips. Metro tickets are also valid for other types of public transport in Moscow. Paying for one trip allows passengers an unlimited stay in the metro network before leaving the turnstiles. To get to the station platform, you need to put the card to the turnstile validator, while the remaining number of paid trips on the purchased card will be displayed on the turnstile display. The validity of the card and the number of trips can be checked on a separate validator next to the metro ticket offices. Free travel is provided for children under seven and pensioners in the Moscow metro.
