The Kiev metro was opened on November 6, 1960 and became the 3rd metro (after Moscow and Leningrad) in the USSR. By the beginning of 2014, the Kiev metro consisted of 3 lines crossing all districts of the city, and 52 stations (6 of which are ground-based), the total track length is 67.6 km. Over the past 10 years, the annual passenger traffic has fluctuated significantly, but has always exceeded the 500 million mark. Average daily passenger traffic is 1.5 million people.
The first plans to create an underground in Kiev date back to 1884, when the City Duma received a project for the construction of tunnels between the river and railway stations of the city. The rejected project was again considered in 1916, when a Russian-American trading company tried to raise money for construction. But this time the duma gave a refusal.
The metro construction project was approved only at the end of the 30s - in 1938, construction began, which was stopped by the Great Patriotic War. After the war, work continued in 1949. In February 1960, testing began on the first section of the metro with five stations from the Vokzalnaya station to the Dnepr station. The opening of the metro in Kiev was timed to coincide with the next anniversary of the October Revolution. In 1970, the construction of the second line began, in 1976 it was put into operation. The third line was opened on New Year's Eve 1990.
The architecture of the Kiev metro stations corresponds to the general style of the stations in the cities of the USSR. 15 stations have ground lobbies. In 2012, the station "Golden Gate" of the Syretsko-Pecherskaya line, built in 1989, took 22nd place in the list of the most beautiful metro stations in Europe.

Travel in the Kiev metro

To pay for travel in the Kiev metro, use tokens for one trip, refillable transport cards and monthly passes, which can be purchased at the ticket offices and automatic machines of the metro. One-way fare provides for an unlimited time in the metro system. Discussions on zonal fare are underway.
Students enjoy a preferential right of travel (50%), free travel is provided for pensioners and school-age children.
