Khao Lak Beach - good beach but little infrastructure

Khao Lak Beach, of the same name with the name of the entire resort, occupies only the third place in popularity after the most visited and developed Bang Niang and Nang Tonga. In the north, Khao Lak beach is separated from Nang Tong by a high cliff, so it is impossible to walk along the sea from the neighboring more northern beach. The main infrastructure of the beach and most of the hotels are located on its northern part.

Beach description

This area of all the beaches of Khao Lak I liked the least. Firstly, the roads are asphalt-gravel, which is inconvenient and looks so-so. Visually, everything around seemed less beautiful than in Bang Niang and Nang Tong. Secondly, the area is small, you don't really look like it, literally the road from the highway to the beach and a couple of lanes.

The total length of the beach is about two kilometers. This area can be conditionally divided into two parts, north and south. In the northern part there are all the hotels and all the beach infrastructure, in the southern part there is almost nothing, only palm trees and fields, and near the coast the Poseidon hotel and 3 cafes.

Further south there is a stone ridge, behind which you can see an even wilder beach, where there are no people at all, and where, in principle, you can walk along the coast.

Usually they live in the northern part, and in the southern part they walk along the coast. Yes, you can get there by car or bike, but you need to go through the track and a pretty decent hook will come out.

Entering the water, depth and waves

Entry into the water is quite sharp, the shore goes down at a noticeable angle, so that almost immediately the depth becomes chest-deep for an adult. In the low tide season, the sea leaves a little, but after walking 10-20 meters in shallow water, you can already swim. Waves happen, as elsewhere on the Andaman Sea coast, in summer.

Sun beds and shade

Casuarin trees grow along the beach, palm trees or other types of vegetation in some places. But this is not near the water itself, the strip of sand is quite wide and often between the sand and trees there is also a strip of green vegetation - vines and grass creeping along the ground.

In the early morning, from dawn, casuarins cast a shadow just towards the sea, so morning is the most comfortable time, with a natural shadow. Towards noon, the shadows almost completely disappear and then the sun shines directly in the face, and at sunset it goes into the sea. But towards evening and sunset, the sun is not burning, but even pleasant.

There is also a shadow from the umbrellas, which are displayed on the beach by cafes, hotels and small businessmen who trade for a living by renting sun loungers with umbrellas to tourists. Hotels often display their sun loungers under the casuarine trees, thus occupying the best shaded spots..

Shops and attractions

There are small shops, cafes and the like in the north of the beach, along the street leading to the sea. In the same area, there is an elephant village where tourists can ride one of these symbols of Thailand. The continuation of Khao Lak Beach south is a very pleasant place.

Especially in the area of large stones. Not surprisingly, many people walk here along the beach from the north. Clear sea, stones, there is probably snorkeling, while there are few people. North of the stones and before reaching Poseidon bungalos there are three cafes on the beach and parking next to them.

Houses and hotels on the beach

The Khao Lak area is small, practically it is one street, it is also the road to the beach. A couple of lanes depart from it and that's it. But this small patch accommodates hotels, resorts, cafes, massages and other things that a tourist needs.

In this area, there is an inexpensive, even by today's Russian standards, and at the same time a five-star and with a good rating Khaolak Merlin Resort, a simpler and closer to the Pechkasem road - Jo Guesthouse .

Further, the beach strip goes to the south, but there is practically no infrastructure, except for the secluded Poseidon Bungalows, almost reaching which there are several beach cafes.

Hotels in Khao Lak>

Be sure (and I insist) to check for discounts or special offers on the excellent Roomguru service. He will quickly and easily show you discounts in all existing booking systems. In Asia, for example, there are a lot of offers on Agoda.com, which are much more interesting than for exactly the same hotels on Booking.com.

For the lazy, here are the direct links to the hotels listed above:

How to find the beach

In the very north of the beach there is essentially one street leading to the sea. If you go along the highway from Phuket, then it is difficult not to notice it, it will be right before the start of the ascent up the mountain, behind which there will be Nang Thong beach.

At the very south of the beach is the Poseidon Bungalos Hotel, following the signs you can drive from the highway by car to the parking lot at the cafes. There is one main road. The Poseidon Bungalos hotel itself is located at some distance from the beach, but a path leads from it to the beach..

To get to the wild beach (even farther south), you need to climb the stone ridge, which is located right by the sea, on the beach. The wild beach is generally empty, not a soul. At the same time, from the ridge of stones you can see barbed wire and red buoys in the distance on the shore. According to the map, there is a military base there..

This means that the beach is either completely closed to the public, or you have to enter through a military base, if they allow it (there is such a thing in Hua Hin and Pattaya, for example). Plus a river flows into the sea in the same place. The wild beach to the south stretches for several kilometers to the cape, after which the city of Lam Kaen and the Thap Lamu pier begin, from where they swim to Similans.

Khao Lak Beach

Khao Lak Beach
Despite the fact that the beach is called Khao Lak, the infrastructure is not here, but in the villages of Bang Niang and Nang Thong. The beach itself is good, there are not many people, but I didn't like the area near the beach very much. The point is in the northern part of the beach (where the village is). The southern part with only one hotel and a couple of cafes on the shore, they go there on the beach on foot.
