Samui Camp Bar - the best point on Koh Samui and scary Buddhas in the forest

Samui Camp Bar is a bar on a large rock, located directly above the Lamai village, closer to the edge where MACRO was built, and there is also a famous landmark - rocks Hin Ta Hin Yai. In addition to being a bar and hangout place, it is also one of the best viewpoints on the eastern part of the island. I met a lot of similar places in Koh Phangan, but on Koh Samui there are only a few of them..

Samui Camp Bar

Update for May 2018: the bar is no longer there, now there is a construction site for something large-scale and, apparently, not cheap. It looks like a villa. So the information below is hopelessly outdated..

It is a small rasta bar made of driftwood, bamboo, planks and everything that came to hand. The part of the bar where the counter, drinks, equipment and wires are located is hidden under the roof of the building, in the same place there are five bar stools for those who «lucky» get into a bar in the rain.

The rest of the territory is an open space, partly cultivated, partly just a bare rock with concrete chairs. IN «hall» there are pillows on the floor, low tables are placed, you can see from the interior that they will not be surprised at your question about «smoke».

A beautiful view of Lamai and the sea opens from the cliff, as you can see from the pictures - I came here right after the rain, people were apparently washed away, it was rotten in the bar itself, there was only a Thai man with dreadlocks, who is also a bartender. But even in cloudy weather it was unrealistically beautiful here. But one is bored. But the most it will be if you gather here with friends and sit longer.

UPD As of August 2017, the bar seems to have come to an end. According to our subscribers, the bar itself is broken, and the prospects for its further existence are vague. In any case, it was, is and will be one of the best views in the east of Koh Samui..

Strange figures of Buddhas in the jungle

If you drive along the road, without turning to Samui Camp, and go to a dead end where the concrete road ends, then on the left in the direction of travel there will be the remains of either an old bar, or a temple, and about twenty terrible sculptures in the middle of stones and jungle. Maybe this is a parody of Buddha park nearby, only on a smaller scale?

It is not recommended to go there without closed clothes and shoes - there are many thorns and tall vegetation. The statues were erected apparently for beauty, and after the destruction of the buildings, from which only the walls of the toilet remained, the statues turned into targets for the owners of weapons. On closer inspection, you can see bullet holes on them, well, or maybe so it seemed to me. I don’t undertake to explain who is who in these figures, but most likely characters from fairy tales, legends and Buddhism.

Information to visit

Prices here are average for the hospital, there is no food as such. I ordered myself a can of Schweppes, it cost me 30 baht. The entire menu of the bar is drinks, and by and large, this place is intended specifically for communication with music, cigarettes and alcohol. Behind the bar, up the slope, there are several thatched bungalows where you can stay overnight if you wish. On Fridays, noisy parties take place here, I have not seen it myself, but people say that it is fun.

How to get here

Before coming here, I read that the road to the bar is quite difficult, but for me it is quite easy. From the ring road, the climb takes no more than three minutes, after which you will have to pass one bar on the left, which is also well nestled on the rocks and has a good view from it, but this is not the right place. And 50 meters after this bar, at a lonely house at the turn, there will be a signpost to the right, onto a dirt road covered with old coconut peels. The bar owner's old pickup truck periodically runs along this road, it is also an elevator.

For inexperienced bike riders, I recommend dropping equipment near your home. Because a narrow strip of cement, about 50 cm wide, leads upstairs, and if you do not cope with the control, it will be very unhealthy. Plus, the road is not straight, but with a closed turn, so there is a chance to face the same newcomer. But if you are with a bike «no misters», then after 100 meters above there is a small parking for cars and scooters. Speaking of cars, I mean four-wheel drive SUVs, because an ordinary passenger car won't even drag itself here.
