Rest in Abkhazia - Pitsunda

In Abkhazia, on the Black Sea coast, there is an amazingly beautiful city - the resort Pitsunda, which has a Mediterranean subtropical climate, which makes it a favorite destination for many vacationers. If you are going on vacation to Abkhazia, then think about Pitsunda.

Rest in Abkhazia Pitsunda

The name of the city comes from the Greek word «pityus», what does pine mean. The city is simply buried in the green of pine forests, the healing properties of which make the place especially popular for people who want to improve their health. For this, the city has a wide network of health resorts, rest houses and boarding houses, the most famous of which are Pitsunda Resort, Boxwood Grove, Riviera and many others, each of which is unique in its own way, having its own unique architectural style and stunning, sometimes reserved, natural area.

The pine grove of Pitsunda itself deserves a separate discussion - a place where a unique pine tree grows, the same age as the dinosaurs themselves.

Attractions of Pitsunda

The main attractions of the city are the sun, pine trees and the clear sea with its fine pebble beaches. The air temperature in summer here, on average, is about 23 ° С (average temperature in August), and winters are very mild with an average January temperature of 6 ° С. In addition, the resort is bordered on all sides by the Caucasian mountain ranges, which protects the area from cold sea winds.

Of course, traces of war are visible everywhere - many buildings are abandoned to their fate, and nature gradually absorbs all the creations of man's hands. But on the other hand, because of this, it is still clean there, and there are not so many tourists. Accordingly, you do not have to feel like a herring on the beach..

Yes, it was a one-day excursion, but we got a complete idea of the rest in Abkhazia. In addition, many of our acquaintances and friends went there and added to our impressions.

There is also an architectural landmark in Pitsunda, a heritage of the Middle Ages - the Pitsunda Temple, built in honor of the Apostle Andrew the First-Called. The temple, more reminiscent of a castle, was built in the 10th century, which fell on the reign of the third Georgian king Bagrat - from the dynasty of the ancient Georgian royal family - Bagration.

Until the 17th century, the temple was constantly improved and completed, until the danger of Turkish expansion hung over the city. For a while the temple was abandoned and only in the middle of the 19th century it was re-activated and consecrated in honor of the Assumption of the Virgin. Organ music evenings are now held here.

As for the history of the resort city itself, it must be said that the first signs of human life in this place were recorded as early as the 4th century. BC BC, where, later, the city and port of Pitiunt was founded by the Greeks. Until the beginning of our era, the city was part of the Pontic kingdom, and already, starting from the 4th century, the center of Christianity in the Caucasus was founded here.

At the end of the 8th century, Pitiunt entered the Abkhazian kingdom and remained there until the 17th century, when this land fell under the rule of the Ottoman Empire. The city fell under the rule of the Russian Empire only at the beginning of the 19th century..
