Culture of Latvia
At the crossroads of many roads, cultures, languages and historical traditions, Russia’s small Baltic neighbor, Latvia, finds itself. Its historical development was largely determined by the influence of neighboring states - Poland, Germany, and other Baltic republics. Nevertheless, the state managed to develop a unique phenomenon that we today call the culture of Latvia. Not too similar even to neighboring customs, unique cuisine, distinctive holidays and national costume, all this makes the small Baltic country a worthy tourist destination of the Old World.
In the list of UNESCO
The historical center of the capital of the country is not in vain considered one of the most attractive European cities. Cozy, clean and quiet old Riga is included in the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage List for its originality and cultural and historical value. Car traffic is practically prohibited in the city-monument, and tourist routes here begin and end at Dome Square.
The first stone defensive walls were erected in Riga at the beginning of the 13th century. Their fragments are only partially preserved, but the fortress towers of the XIV century look much better. The main architectural sights of old Riga of that era - the Powder Tower and the Swedish Gate.
For those who prefer long walking tours, the capital of Latvia has prepared a whole list of cultural and historical monuments:
- Dome Cathedral with the famous organ. Built in the 13th century and is still the Cathedral Lutheran Church.
- The main Catholic church in Latvia is the Cathedral of St. James, built in the brick Gothic style. The famous stained glass windows of the cathedral were created at the beginning of the 20th century and are dedicated to scenes of Holy Communion.
- The house with cats by the architect Scheffel, the project of which was carried out at the beginning of the twentieth century in the style of rational Art Nouveau. Keeps an old legend about why cats once turned their tails towards the Great Guild building.
