Ao Nam Mao Beach - not for swimming, but for contemplation

Ao Nam Mao Beach is located near Ao Nang, between the Railay Peninsula and Krabi town, in the area of the small bay Ao Nam Mao Bay. And although in the province of Krabi there are many places not only picturesque, but also very popular with tourists, Ao Nammao is rather an exception..

This is not the most impressive beach, but for fans of completely deserted places, it can be interesting. Civilization and infrastructure in this area are concentrated along the main road, in fact, this is a village and there is practically no entertainment here..

Beach description

But you can find accommodation here, there are resorts and bungalow hotels with a large green area, villas for rent. The beach itself is not very swimable - at high tide, a very narrow strip remains from the coast in many places, and at low tide the sea goes very far, exposing stones with sharp shells and debris.

So the biggest plus of the beach is that while walking along it, you may not meet a single soul in a few hours..

The beach is about 4 kilometers long, from the side Railay Peninsula it is bounded by the Ao Nam Mao pier, and on the other there is an attraction and beach - Shell fossil. Along the beach, in some places there are mangroves and large blocks of pressed shells.

Yes, the shell cemetery as an official tourist attraction is located elsewhere, but it is also full of old shells pressed into huge slabs over time..

You need to walk on them more carefully, the shells are sharp. Here you can live practically in the jungle, in silence and away from tourist parties, enjoying solitude. The beach offers a beautiful view of the islands in the distance and it is nice to meet the sunsets here. And from the pier of Ao Nammao, literally in a matter of minutes, you can take a longtail to the beautiful beaches of the Railay Peninsula..

Entering the water, depth and waves

The main disadvantage of the beach is that swimming here is not very convenient and pleasant, and at low tide the water generally goes very far, as well as a lot of garbage on the shore. At low tide from the pier, you can walk freely along the beach, but at high tide there remains a rather narrow strip of land, it is easier to walk along the road. Another interesting feature of Ao Nammao beach is that at night you can see plankton glowing in the dark..

Sun beds and shade

Mangrove trees in the water and trees bordering the beach create shade and a sense of seclusion. The coast at Ao Num Mao is, in principle, very green and there is no problem with shade here at all. Sun loungers come across periodically near more or less large resorts and where the beach allows. As I already wrote, it is not the widest in Krabi. Much easier to find here a hammock suspended from mangroves.

Infrastructure

There are almost no shops and cafes in the beach area. There are several stalls with food and souvenirs at the entrance to the Shell fossil attraction near Ao Nammao. There is also a local market near the pier. Approximately in the middle of the beach there are two beach cafes where you can relax on sun loungers or hammocks.

From the entertainment available on the beach - in some hotels you can rent kayaks or surfboards, on which you can swim while standing, paddle.

You can also ride a horse along the beach, there is a corresponding service with four horses and all the necessary equipment. Nearby is the aforementioned Shell Fossil Shell Cemetery and the Krabi Aquarium several times (although in fact this is a research center - Coastal Fisheries Research and Development Center, but tourists are also allowed there).

Houses and hotels on the beach

One of the most popular hotels on the beach is the small and cozy Rimlay Villas. The houses are located by the beach, have a swimming pool, the territory is well-groomed and green. Among the villas on the beach there are cute modern houses with a pool - Amatapura Luxury Beachfront Resort. Also next to the beach is the democratic hotel Krabi Tropical Beach Resort with simple rooms and a swimming pool.

Hotels in Krabi>

Be sure (and I insist) to check for discounts or special offers on the excellent Roomguru service. He will quickly and easily show you discounts in all existing booking systems. In Asia, for example, there are a lot of offers on Agoda.com, which are much more interesting than for exactly the same hotels on Booking.com.

For the lazy, here are the direct links to the hotels listed above:

How to find the beach

You can get to the beach from Ao Nang and from Krabi town by songteo, bus, tuk tuk, longtail. With Railay, there is also a boat service near the beach, as mentioned above. From Krabi town to Ao Nam Mao pier, longtails operate as water taxis. In all cases, the road to the beach will take 10-15 minutes.
