The rainy season on Koh Samui and the flood tale
When people have nothing to talk about, they talk about the weather. But when it comes to rains on a trip, it turns out that for many it is almost the most important question. I already wrote about Thailand weather by month, and posted a small post about rain season, but separately I would like to briefly talk about the rainy season on Koh Samui, because I was asked about this more than once. Moreover, it so happened that the only rainy season that I saw with my own eyes was just on Koh Samui, yes, and even with a real flood!
The rainy season on Koh Samui
The official figures are that the wettest months on the island are from October to January. Moreover, November and December are the wettest. However, as practice has shown, the season does not fall within the season. Sometimes, it's just a certain amount of rain, and sometimes it's a whole flood, as luck would have it..
When we went to Koh Samui this year, we were also afraid that it would be too «to rain», still wanted to swim more. But October in general was almost all sunny and did not resemble the rainy season in any way. The weather in November turned bad, storms began, it rained for several days in a row, it was annoying, of course, but I can't say that it is very critical. Often it rained only at night, or during the day, but ended quickly. Literally a few days I can remember from the whole November, when it rained in a row, without ceasing. Just at this moment, a mini flood happened on Koh Samui..
Surely the Russian media would show only such photos and would claim that the entire island is covered with water, save yourself, whoever can, they like to exaggerate. As with demonstrations in Bangkok... So this flood happened locally near the Big C store and disappeared in half an hour. We were just shopping for food and then waited until we could go home. Yes, we drove back along the road, as if we were sailing on a boat, but the water was not higher than the rapids and only in some places. Literally for several days (well, maybe a week) there were some problems with moving around Koh Samui, but you could just sit at home this time, because most of the houses are on stilts and there is nothing to worry about. I perfectly understand that everything could be worse, as in one of the recent years, but now we cannot always take it as a basis..
If you are going to live on Koh Samui, it is better to find out in advance in which places the probability of flooding is the least. You can search for hotels nearby using RoomGuru. You can also see our personally compiled directory of houses on Koh Samui and detailed review best hotels in Koh Samui.
So we still had time cool meeting to spend after this flood, to drive to the Namuang waterfall, and separately I went to the Khin Lad waterfall alone. Waterfalls are especially good during this period.!
As a result, I made the following conclusion: if you really, really do not like rains, or if you are traveling for a short time, when every day counts, then during this period it is better not to meddle in Koh Samui. There are other islands to choose from, however, if you need it with infrastructure, then only Phuket remains. And so, there is nothing to be afraid of the rainy season and floods. By the way, they do not happen in «official» rainy seasons so you can't keep yourself out of it.
