In the northwest of Phuket Town, not far from Monkey mountains, there is a hill called Khao Rang. The original name of the hill is Khao Lang, which means «mountain behind». Rank Hill is a hundred meters lower than Monkey Hill, but no less popular with tourists for its stunning views and monkeys living on the hillsides. I highly recommend it - a good place, it is worth stopping here even if not on purpose, but on the way - be sure to drop by. The view, unfortunately, is not panoramic, but about 180 degrees, but the atmosphere is more pleasant towers on Khao Khad mountain, where the view of the whole 360.

Rank Hill Observation Deck
As I was told, the toponym «Lang» (which transformed into «Rank» because Thais pronounce this sound differently) got to the hill since the time when the town of Phuket ended at the foot of Rang Hill, and the hill itself was not a mega-popular viewpoint, as it is now, but the border of civilization. However, the mass tourist knows little about Khao Lang, because travel agencies everywhere promote this attraction as an observation deck of Rank Hill in Phuket. However, here is one of those cases when travel agencies can be trusted - the observation deck over Phuket Town turned out to be really magnificent.
The outskirts of Phuket Town have long moved behind the Back Mountain, turning Khao Rang into a wooded hill in the middle of the city. By the way, the jungle has grown so violently that they block half of the view on the lookout, significantly narrowing the panorama with the view. There is a lot of shade and a cool breeze, so even if you arrive at the mountain in the midst of the tropical heat, you will find this place pleasant and cool..
The territory of Rank Hill in Phuket has been ennobled, with far from the most spacious parking on the top of the hill, there are benches for visitors, a sports field with exercise equipment for working with your weight is equipped, a swing on an old banyan tree and a monument to the former governor of the island.
There are two modern cafeterias, Breeze and Tun Ka. Moreover, when I was driving here, I did not know that there was a cafe here. I thought that I would stop by quickly, take pictures on the go, mark the nuances on the map and go further, but then I decided to go down to the Tun-Ka cafe. It is located a little lower than the observation deck, literally 10-20 meters, so there is also a panoramic view there, but it is like that, partially limited by trees.
So, I liked Tun Ka so much with its interior that I decided to stay for a fruit shake, at the same time testing the local cuisine. I was so pleased that about this cafeteria I have there is a separate post and I can safely recommend it - you can combine a visit to the viewing room and lunch or dinner.
In addition to food and species, wild monkeys can be found in Rank Hill. Feeding monkeys is possible, but I will not stop reminding you that this activity is dangerous, and the behavior of monkeys is unpredictable. You can buy food for monkeys at the foot of Rank Hill, for 10 baht a bag of peanuts or for 20 baht a bunch of bananas.
Also here proudly announced availability «fitness park», but ignore the big name. This is, in fact, just a winding path that allows you to climb to the top or descend from it by 50 meters, that is, not even half the way..
Information to visit
the entrance is free.
A small parking lot, but there are always enough free places on a bike, but on a car it is different. This should be borne in mind if you are driving. But if anything, you can get up a little lower on the road on the slope. Two roads lead to the observation deck, which one to go on - no difference, they are almost the same.
It is open for visiting 24/7, nowhere are there signs with a timetable for work and there are no barriers and gates, that is, the territory was not initially planned to be limited for visiting. At night it is no less interesting here, thanks to the large town at the foot. If at any other viewpoint you see nothing but the green lanterns of fishing boats on the horizon, then on the Rank Hill observation deck you will have a view of the golden valley and the starry sky..
Phuket sightseeing tour>
This observation deck is often visited as part of a sightseeing tour of the island. You can see several top places at once in one day.
On the way to this observation deck or after, you can go to Cao Rang Temple, he is on the slope of the same mountain and one of the roads passes right by him. The temple is not very touristy, with a large seated Buddha figure.
