Bang Khao Beach - the longest beach in the south
Bang Khao Beach is located in the south of Koh Samui. Like a beach Maenam is the reference beach of the north, Chaweng and Lamai - the most popular beach in the east of Koh Samui, and Taling Ngam in the west, Bang Khao is the most characteristic beach in the south. The length of Bang Khao is not small, 4 km 300 m.It is, perhaps, the most inconvenient for swimming, the most dirtied and unpopular beach on the island, but at the same time the most beautiful in the south of Koh Samui.

Beach description
The sand on the beach is light yellow, divided into two stripes. Closer to the water, the smaller one, with shells and fragments of coral, was washed and compressed, and nailed along the coast. The beach stretches from east to west, from the mouth of the Ban Thale river to the famous on the island Laem Sor Pagoda.
Closer to the pagoda, the sand gives way to large rocks and corals, transforming the seabed into Martian landscapes at low tide. Bang Khao's cleanliness is partially maintained, in front of rare villas and hotels, but the main part of Bang Khao's four kilometers is a perfectionist hell..
Debris in layers and patterns lies in places where there are more stones, getting stuck in them. Debris accumulates at the sand / grass border, thrown out by the waves. Rubbish is stuffed into the grass and exposed tree roots. Garbage is left to dry on the shore when the water gradually subsides. In short, the beach is wild.
Due to its rocky, muddy bottom, shallow water and unkempt, the beach is not popular, and only local, unassuming connoisseurs of island seclusion come to rest on Bang Khao. For the most part, these are young people with large backpacks and people of an age who are not afraid of mounds of coral in the water and fishing boats in the neighborhood..
If you find a section of the beach with a more or less clean entrance to the water, and there are such, then it would be a great option for a vacation with a child. But local stray dogs roam along the shore, some of which seem to be assigned to resorts. But the main Caula lives near the Lameso pagoda, where they were fed by compassionate people and are putting their own order on the beach..
In case anyone is interested in reading about other places, I have a short overview of all the beaches of Koh Samui, will help you decide on the choice of the beach.
Entering the water, depth and waves
Opposite the Ban Tale river, the width of the shallow-water bottom reaches 400 meters, and gradually narrows to 30 meters near the Lameso pagoda. At low tide, this section of the seabed remains in the sun, and, before the tide, the sea on Bang Khao is not.
Except for some deeper places near the artificial canals for fishing boats, where you can splash waist-deep in water. Thanks to the protection of the coral thickets, which provided such a bottom structure, there are no very strong waves on Bang Khao..
Sun beds and shade
It is possible that beach accessories are sometimes washed ashore in large hotels or villas, but I walked all four kilometers along the coast on foot and saw nothing but sand, stones, mud and dense vegetation along the sea. There is plenty of natural shade on Bang Khao, there is a place for everyone on the shore.

Infrastructure
The area around Bang Khao beach is quite remote from the main roads and active life of the island. There are no large clubs, discos and noisy venues. The area is not yet heavily built up with houses, there are many green areas, palm groves and farm fields. Stores - mostly so-called «taishops», where a poor assortment of the most essential products and household items is presented, from the point of view of Thais.
Therefore, you can always buy ice, energy, water, beer and crispy snacks without any problems, but for more serious food you will have to go farther. The nearest minimarkets are located on the Ring Road and in Hua tanone, it is three kilometers from Bang Khao. Nearest hypermarket - Tesco Lotus on Lamai.
The nearest attractions of Koh Samui on Bang Khao:
- Lameso Pagoda;
- Chedi Buddha (Buddha Jaidee);
- Rhum Distillery;
- Samui Aquatic Animal and Tiger Zoo;
- Temple Pradoem (Wat Pradoem);
- Butterfly Garden.
Houses and hotels on the beach
If you are not too lazy and sit down at YandexMaps, then using their tool «ruler» you can find out that the built-up part of Bang Khao is 1 km 100 m in total. The remaining 4.2 km are wastelands, undeveloped forest areas. There are about a dozen resorts and villas on the shore, some of which are not yet completed.
The main housing available for rent is located inland within a radius of 2-3 km. The building density of this area is very low, but the area itself is not small, so if you like Bang Khao, you will always be able to find a house..
Of the small number of hotels right on the shore, one can single out a quiet place with houses around the pool - Laem Sor Residence and Samahita Retreat with comfortable modern cottages. If you want to book a hotel here in advance or look for accommodation on other beaches, I have selection of hotels on Koh Samui with a good rating and reviews.

How to find the beach
In order to get to Bang Khao, you need to go along the Ring Road of Koh Samui until the exit to road 4173, which then intersects with road 4170. This road, 4170, is a semi-circular road and it passes near the beaches of Bang Khao, Tong Krut, Tong Tanot, Pang Ka and Taling Ngam. As soon as you find yourself at 4170, take any exit to the left, in the direction of travel. For swimming, there is one good section of Bang Khao, a favorite of local retirees from Europe, and these gentlemen always know where is good.
