Experience of living in a TRESH-guesthouse on Khaosan for 170 baht
My wife and I very rarely stay in such guesthouses, but since this time I was alone, I decided to try. Fortunately, I almost do not need anything except a bed. I'm already used to the heat and a fan is enough, a shared toilet and shower are not a problem at all, I have my own Internet. So I walked around a bit Khaosan Road in Bangkok and decided to spend the night superbudgetary this time. By the way, the first place was according to the reviews of Grenn House on Rambuttri, but it cost 325 baht and was not enough trash, so after half an hour I found it even easier and almost free - for 170 baht :)

This guest house is not even in the booking systems. You can book a more adequate guest house through the RoomGuru hotel search engine, I recommend it if you are going to look for something else in Bangkok in this area or in another. RoomGuru is a metasearch service that, in terms of its functionality, has long been in the top of the best in this segment, and at the same time, there are often more favorable offers for the hotel you are interested in..
On the question of how much housing costs in the capital of Thailand and how much money you need to live. If you set a goal, then you can live almost for free. I do not exclude that you can find it even cheaper, if necessary. And not only in Bangkok, but also in resorts. I agree, for an amateur, but everyone chooses the degree of necessary comfort, depending on their life priorities and circumstances. Before that, I have already stayed many times in budget guesthouses (for 300-500 baht) and I will say that many of them were quite cute and authentic, where it was nice to be. It was just that they had to be searched for according to reviews so as not to get just trash. In general, I would advise budget travelers through couchsurfing stopped, the conditions will be better, and you can talk interestingly.
In short, I rented a room from Merry for a whopping 170 baht. But there are also larger rooms with a private shower and even air conditioning, but the prices for them are already the same as elsewhere in the neighboring guest houses - about 500-600 baht and more. And given that the atmosphere here is spartan everywhere and all the rooms have windows into the corridor, then IMHO the option is not very good, it is better to look for something else, I gave the links above, for 500-800 baht excellent rooms with everything you need.
If you need something more comfortable with your own private bathroom and air conditioning, then I recommend Rajata Hotel, similarly close to Khaosan Road. You can still search for something nearby, through hotel search engine in Bangkok.
Interior
It's a bit fun to stay here after good hotels, but the experience is interesting. Try it! Considering that I only needed one night, and I only came to the room to sleep, it is quite normal. The main thing was that it was clean everywhere, both in the room and in the shower, and there were no animals. You know when I watched some episodes «Heads and Tails», where there, oh my God, one of the participants had to stay in inexpensive hotels or, oh, horror, a hostel, it seems to me that they either got drunk or went too far for the sake of the show. No one will die from one night, on the contrary, it is interesting even.
So, I immediately remembered the movie «Beach», or rather, even a book that I read not so long ago. There, the main character just stopped at Khaosan in something similar, only dirtier and older. Well, in those days, probably, all inexpensive hotels were like that, but now everything is more or less bearable, even in budget ones. And also Hong Kong was remembered with its miniature inexpensive hotels, only at a price 10 times higher :)
In general, if you want to get out of your comfort zone (of course, provided that you are not an inveterate backpacker who lives in such places every day and this has already become the norm) and feel the spirit of Asia, which is sometimes written and talked about, then you can try such a guesthouse to stay at least for a day.
The only thing that bothered me was the not very friendly hosts ... In Thailand, you somehow pay very much attention to this, because you get used to smiles very quickly. And you can hear who is making what around the neighbors, the walls are very thin, and the ceiling has large mesh windows. But this is not music, and not a drunken hubbub, and thanks for that. Dorm :)
And they also squeezed Wifi, they wanted as much as 60 baht per day ... True, a little later, after my stay there, wifi seemed to be made free of charge. True, there are no outlets in these rooms for 170 baht, so you will have to charge downstairs in the cafe.
